Aum members followed the guru and real-life Bond villain Shoko Asahara, idolizing him to the extent that they would drink his blood and/or bathwater. Aum Shinrikyo was founded on the basis of meditation and spiritual guidance, but before long, it was a group determined to jump-start the apocalypse. Aum Shinrikyo (オウム真理教) is an active Japanese new-age religious cult-like movement founded in 1987. Similar to other doomsday cults such as The Order of The Solar Temple and Heaven’s Gate, the members of the movement believed a doomsday prophecy, which included a World War III. Members of the Japan-based new religious movement AUM Shinrikyo (since 2000 called Aleph) were soon identified as the perpetrators of the attack.

2020-03-25 · Aum Shinrikyo founder Shoko Asahara is transferred to the Metropolitan Police Department for questioning. Asahara, whose real name was Chizuo Matsumoto, was hanged on July 6, 2018.

[5] The Aum Shinrikyo is grounded in Buddhism but with a strong mixture of assorted Eastern and Western mystic beliefs including the works of the 16th Century French astronomer, Nostradamus. The religion preaches that there are a number of steps or levels of consciousness that a member can reach through the teachings of "the Spirit of Truth, His Holiness the Master Shoko Asahara".
